In death his sacred heart has become the pulse of the innermost heart of the world. And down here, the earth, in her continual development in space and time, sinks her roots into the power of all-mighty God. Karl Rahner

Spirituality of the Sacred Heart: History, Tradition and Theology  (John Rate msc)

Particular reference will be made to habits of prayer and styles of liturgical architecture to illustrate the emphases of different eras.

Spirituality of the Heart in Scripture: the witness of the prophets (Fr Brian Boyle)

Be led through an exegesis of Ezekiel 47:1-12 to discern the underlying formative ideas and new consciousness to which the prophets are calling Israel.

Images of Heart Spirituality (Peter Malone msc)

Focus: Film clips (from Jesus films and Christ-figure films) looking at how our images of Jesus changed during the 20th century (more humanity, or more divinity), where we are now, and how Christ-figures image heart spirituality.

Spirituality of the Heart and Healing (Julie Taylor)

"The way of the heart is our journey to wholeness. A spirituality of the heart invites us to embrace, integrate and share our woundedness on this healing journey. It is through our woundedness we share our pain and suffering with Jesus and the joy of transformation offered to all humanity. Healing is definitely the heart's journey!"

“From Devotion to Spirituality”: MSC & the Heart Tradition (Denis Uhr msc)

An historical overview of the journey of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in light of the broader heart tradition.

For Jules Chevalier, devotion to the heart of Jesus was something far more than various practices of piety. It was for him a whole way of life: a special way of responding to the Christian vocation. (J Savage MSC, The Charism of Jules Chevalier, 1976, Ms)

Spirituality of the Heart

In contrast to theology, we speak of spirituality as practical. It focuses a way of Christian living. It is also practical in that it insists on ‘groundedness’ - an engagement with suffering and resistance to the causes of injustice.

A spirituality of the heart attends to the movements of one’s own heart and to the movement within one’s relationships, including the Eternal Relationship within all human relationships. A spirituality of the heart of Jesus perceives Jesus’ healing and teaching as emerging from his compassion, from the sensitivity of his heart. It sees Jesus’ love as motivating all his ministry, and his willingness to be sacrificed for us (the suffering servant).

Come and join us on a journey to the heart!
